Georgette M. Halaby

Wife of Jamil Halaby
in Methuen, MA,  USA

Message from Antoine Halaby:
Dear Riad , this is to inform you that my sister in law, Jamil's wife, Georgette, has passed away on May 28. Please share this information on Shweir.com

• Georgette M. Halaby, 89 years young, of Methuen passed away peacefully on Wednesday May 28, 2014 at Lawrence General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Methuen and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Selma Kamal. Georgette was raised and educated in Methuen and was a graduate of Edward F. Searles High School. Georgette worked for many years at Gould & Modicon in Andover, Paul Sullivan Sportswear in Lawrence and Lawrence Maid.
Georgette's prized possession was her kitchen, where she spent hours expressing her love and admiration towards family and friends. From her heart to her hands, she let her love show. With her own recipes for baklava and kibbee (Lebanese food she learned to cook from her mother) Sitto's house was a place of nourishment and entertainment of old stories of adventures she had; and ones that we would take as well. Her heart and home was kept open like a window in the spring, always waiting to feel the breeze of a passing wind and the birds that took notice to her bird feeders. Her expectation was that love was enough and for her, with her, and through her, it still is an open window and a promise she kept. Everyone whose path Georgette crossed was left with a memory that would last a lifetime. Both as a child and adult, she enjoyed the ocean at Salisbury and Hampton beach with her entire family.
Georgette is survived by her loving husband of 58 years Jamil Halaby, loving children Effie Halaby, Mitchell Halaby, Jamil Halaby, Jr. and his wife Beth and Matthew Halaby and his wife Lynne. All her cherished seven grandchildren , her loving siblings brother Albert Kamal and sister Vivian Runions both of Methuen, and several nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her late brother, Joseph Kamal and his family.
Funeral Services and burial will be private at the request of the family. Arrangements are by the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Methuen Senior Center, 77 Lowell St, Methuen, MA, 01844. For online condolences please visit www.cataudellafh.com.

Sami Hawi Returns to Shweir
by Minister Beshara Mirhege
In a church Memorial in Shweir  on July 21, 2013

Elias, (Lee), was full of life. He was very strong, healthy and a proud man.
He will be greatly missed.
Many family members and those who knew Elias well asked about the circumstances of his quick death. Lee died after a short and mysterious illness.
Beginning in February, Lee complained about skin rashes.
In March and April, he had difficulty swallowing and tasting. In late May, Lee was admitted to hospital in San Francisco.
Shortly thereafter, his main organs began to weaken or fail.
His family is mystified by lack of cause and is still waiting for good answers.
In early June, Lee told family members that his doctor indicated that in all the years of his medical practice, he has not seen such unusual multiple circumstances at one time where the cause eluded them.
An autopsy is being conducted. It would take some time for the results which will become public record.
The family expect some clear answers so that they can have closure.

Adel Jamil Merhej

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing Adel Jamil Merhej.

I saw Adel on each of my past 3 visits to Lebanon.  In 2005 and 2007 we were part of the delegations that met with president of Lebanon, Emile Lahoud. As you may note from above picture at left, his presence and energy towers and is felt among all others.  The other 2 pictures are from 2009 at his home patio.  Center photo, Adel pointed to the Merhege family tree that was prepared by Edmond Merhege and is now updated by Paul Merhege. It was drawn on large architectural sheets and goes back to 1745.  It was my quest to add the  missing pieces of how my great grandparents Deeb and Saada Merhege were related.

Oh my God, how sad this is and hard to take.  A dear friend Khalid Aoun Moujaes has passed away

I knew Khalid very well when he was a teenager, just few years younger than I.  He used to hang around us when we were in the band in the late 60’s early 70’s.  He often was sick, with some breathing problem, but somehow always managed to stay up beat.  Last time I saw Khalid, was in 1983 when I went to Lebanon for My dad’s operation and I made a point to locate Khalid and visit with him.  I found him in an office in the Zalka area.  It was no surprise, at the time he had a company that engineered and installed sound systems, and as I remember he was good at it, he was always good at it.  I will always remember when one day in 1971 and said: “George, I signed your band “the Games” to play in a battle of the band at the K- Cola Auditorium, and I think you guys have a very good chance to win it”.  The contest was sponsored by Radio Lebanon, English program D.J. Elaine Jeha. That Saturday was one of the most memorable days of my life, we played great that night and Khalid was right, we did come first.

Somewhere in my very limited collection of pictures from pre-war Lebanon, there is one of the band with this skinny good looking young man playing the bongos and having fun… I will be looking for it tonight because that’s how I remember my friend Khalid Adib Aoun Moujaes, may he rest in peace in the Heavens.  My Deepest condolences to his family

True 3ammo Habeeb, it is rough to lose a grandmother, when you lose someone it is not the age that matter but the memories that relate you to him/her or better to say to his soul and spirit

For me when I say “teta” it is like saying “my childhood”, with her I spent hours and hours cooking in her small kitchen, playing cards, visiting her old relatives, praying…

“teta” was born in Khonshara in a family of 8 children, she learned to read and write, when she died she exceeded the age of 85. at the declaration of the Lebanese independence, she was by accident in Beirut and witnessed that celebration. At the beginning she worked in the cuisine of the ex Chairman of the House of Representatives Habib Abou Chahla. She became a professional career cuisine at the ex Deputy Prime Minister’s cuisine Issam Fares, she said to me once: “this man is very generous, his openhanded towards his people and in everything in his life including his cuisine made me learn about the different tastes and cook different kind of plates, his cuisine was rich”. this job gave her the chance to ameliorate her life and the conditions’ life of her family, it allowed her to continue the building of her house in Ain el Sindyeneh and send her children to school, many said “grandpa was lucky to have such a woman”, she also travelled to work in France in Mr. Halim Korban’s cuisine, she was a good friend with Sitt Rida Himmam, the latter trusted her, she used to ask her to stay at her house in Rabyeh when she used to travel and I used to stay with grandma at that house, it gives a beautiful view to the sea, every day I used to sit on the balcony and watch a majestic sunset. and also travelled to Canada, not for work but to spend time with her late son and his family

As a child, staying at teta’s house brought me big joy, we used to go to visit our relatives in Ain el Sindyeneh, the big family used to gather at grandma’s house, so when it becomes dark outside, I begin negotiations to stay and sleep there, at the beginning mom’s answer used to be “hallaa min chouf” (we will see) and ended by “ask your dad”, to assure my staying I go and whisper in teta’s ear: “teta do you want me to stay with you?” so teta looks at me with brighten eyes and said: “of course” she smiles and I smile, it wasn’t innocent, both of us in soul were agreeing that we have things to do together some of it are delicious, so I continue whispering: “so ask dad to give me permission to stay here”, this demand was easy for her, she elevates her head and address to dad with a strict voice: “Adel, Samar is staying with me tonight… Sunday evening you send someone to take her home”, dad never refused, as for me it was pure happiness.

After everyone leave, calm spread, time to go to bed, our eve begin with prayers “Our Father who art in Heaven” “Hail Mary” followed by prayers for Jesus and different Saints and always ended by “ya rab inta khli2tna w inta tdabberna, la t3awezna la 7adan ghayrak” (Lord, it is you who brought us to this world, for you only to manage our life, do not let us in need for anyone, just for you) after this spiritual duty, we sit face to face well covered to keep warm and begin to play cards… teta never lose, she is always the winner, always proud of herself for not being beaten… but when luck betrays her, it was easy to see oppression on her face and says: “hal wara2 mich mazbout, mich makhlout mni7” (the cards are not well mixed) and we continue playing until we fell asleep

in the morning I used to wake up at 5:00 o’clock on plates’ voices, teta is already in kitchen, I get up and open the kitchen door slowly, the kitchen is up and down, I see teta putting apron that covers her big belly and sinking in a real chaos … seeing me, a lovely smile draw her face, lots of love in her eyes, we used to be happy together, I join her to prepare all kind of food and desserts; there was the main dishes: mooghrabiyeh, kibbeh bil sayniyyeh, lazania, mloukhiyyeh, wara2 3arish… it depends on the kind of invitations she had or demands for invitations someone asked from her. As for desserts it is my favorite part; put flour, add sugar, break the eggs… the oven is warm... cake, sableh… the ashta needs a shake, the ice cream is already in the refrigerator… she always has had new ideas, and is well known in her fine taste in cooking

we keep focusing on cooking until someone knock the door, the sun already rose, uncle arrives to say hello before heading to work, the coffee is already ready, then his cousin arrives, their wives follow them, then my cousins arrive one by one… it is another family gathering before everyone goes to work, as for us, the cousins, it is another day to play together

Teta had the same love to all her grand children, no exceptions, I am sure each one of them has his own story with her, grandma always loved to see the family gathered, she loved people

It wasn’t easy for her and us to send her to “Baytouna” (the Senior Center), the decision was taken after she needed special care, she was always home sick and used to say “Bayteh w ya bwayteteh…” (home sweet home), even there and partially paralyzed, she kept that sweet and lovely smile on her face,

No doubt the ladies and men in Baytouna took good care of her, God give them strength in their tough work,

sorry it was long,

thank you 3ammo Habeeb, Nadia and Gabi for your condolences and for everyone who sent private messages, called by phone or came personally and joined their prayers to ours so Teta’s soul rest in peace, may you live her long age, I ask God to give everyone the love, patience, faith and strength she was blessed to have and I wish every child to experience the love of the elders my brothers, cousins and I tasted through her

In Memory of Metran Elias Najm

Memory Eternal!

His Grace Bishop ELIAS (Najm),

Bishop of Apamea and Abbot of the Patriarchal Monastery of the Holy Prophet Elias in Dhour Shweir, Lebanon.

It is with much sadness that we received the news of the falling asleep in Christ of our beloved brother, His Grace ELIAS (Najm), Bishop of Apamea, and Abbot of St. Elias Monastery in Dhour Shweir, Lebanon.
His Grace was born in the village of Agmeed Shouf, Lebanon.  He came from a priestly family.  His father was a priest in the town of Bhamdoun, Lebanon.  At the age of 14, he enrolled at the Balamand Seminary.  After 5 years at the Balamand, he was sent by the late Patriarch ALEXANDER III (Tahan) to the school of Halki, Turkey, where he studied theology.  After graduation he returned to the Patriarchate of Antioch, and was appointed Abbot of St. Elias Monastery where he served until his repose.  He was very friendly, humble and loved by all people.
We ask the faithful of Orthodox Church to remember him in their fervent prayers.
We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and relatives.  May his memory be eternal, and may his soul rest in peace.

Nassib Dawoode Touma Sawaya
March 31, 1906 - July 19, 2008

Shweir lost an Icon!  He was 102 years young.
Here, last summer, reciting a poem.  You can feel the energy and excitement around him.
"Jiddo Nassib", as he is lovingly called, You will be missed.

In Summer of 2007, members of Shweir.com family, including Nabil Matar and Samar Kiame and I, visited Jiddo Nassib at Baytna.
We were so touched and impressed by his presence of mind and positive outlook.
He was proud, alert and engaging.  He did not wear any glasses.  When he learned that I was the son of Jirgy Shaya Khnaisser, he told me things about my father that I did not know before since my father died in a car accident when I was very young.
Jiddo Nassib recited poems and told stories with vigor and pride. Below are some photos of our visit.

A few days later, we saw him in church.  So well dressed with a smile on his face exchanging greeting with his community.

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Mrs Rida Jurjus Hamam, wife of the late Dr. Nasib Hammam.

Briefly I say: The lady was her Society's Champion and Servant, she helped build the Shweir School and Ain El Hanoote Road.

She was Loving, generous, clever, caring and compassionate lady.
She will be remembered always.
May her Soul rest in peace
Riad

Remembering Mrs. Rida Hammam

Lat summer, I visited Mrs. Rida Hammam with my cousin Riad Khuneiser and friends Nabil Matar and Samar Kiame.

And what a lady she was.  I never seen anyone love Shweir and Ain El Hanout like she did.
Her home is adorned with many pictures of Shweir as well original paintings of Shweiry scenes by internationally recognized artist Shehadeh Moujaes.  When you hear her speak about Shweir, her face lit up.

Oh, and then Ain El Hanoote...  She wrote poems and songs about Ain El Hanoote, she recited one poem and sang one song for us.  All the while, I was wishing so much if only I had a video cam to record that.

I intended to return from California to Shweir this summer and at top of my list was to visit Mrs. Hammam and memorialize her poetry and songs in her own voice about the town and place she loved... Shweir and especially Ain El Hanoote.

Alas, Mrs. Hammam, We all will miss you.

May your soul rest in peace.  May your Memory be Eternal.

Subject: Remembrance of mother

Dear Anwar and George,

I want first of all to thank you and Shweir.com for the spread you have made in memory of  mother, and the kind messages from friends at shweir.com It is really a wonderful remembrance.

After mother's funeral and condolences, I had to go back to Sudan on a continuing mission for the UN, but I have now taken a break and came back to Dhour for mother's 40th service, al-Arba3een, after which there was a moving ceremony to honor by naming Ain-el-Hanout road to her memory. We are grateful to the people and municipality of Dhour el Shweir and Ain el Sindyaneh for this  expression of love and appreciation.

I am staying in Dhour for a while. As you know, I spent 2004 and 2005 with mother as I worked with the University of Balamand to help establish their Office of Development. It was a remarkable opportunity to spend quality time with mother, and she frequently talked about Shweir, Lebanon's situation, and reflected on her own life, works, dreams, and the disappointments associated mainly with Lebanon's political tensions. She saw herself as an indivisible part of Shweir and Lebanon, sharing, with a great depth of feeling, joys, frustrations and opportunities, always with a sense of vision about what kind of legacy is left for a younger generation. We talked a lot during that period, and I have tried to write something that captures the essence of some of what she felt and said. Father used to lovingly call mother 'Zanbaqat al Wadi', Lily of the Valley, a modest small flower which has beauty and fragrance.  This is attached. It might have special meaning to those who knew her.

With best regards,
Habib Hammam

Dr. Halaby is a friend of my wife's family. I remember a few months into marriage, I had chest pains (obvious symptoms?), so they took me to Dr. Halabi who examined me and sent me home laughing!
In summer of 2002, my wife and I were in the late Rowayda's shop and he walked in. My wife recognized him and went over to give him a hug. He wondered who this pretty blonde might be that was giving him a hug! He was so glad to see her 30 yrs. later, after having introduced herself!
Anyway ya Habeeb, looking at the pictures, I saw an Evangelical pastor--a friend of mine--wearing a black frock with white collar either praying or preaching! I felt good that an Evangelical pastor had a part in the tribute to Dr. Halaby!

"Abu Fares"
Fouad Fares Khnaisser

Abu Fares was was an icon to Shweir.
In his prime, he served the people of Shweir in many facets.

Abu Fares was the link for the People of Shweir to the outside world.
Before there was a Difaa Madani and Red Cross, there was Abu Fares.

If there was an emergency, they called Abu Fares.
If someone needed to deliver a baby and needed to go to the hospital,... Abu Fares

In the summer time, if someone needed to rent bikes, you guessed it... Abu Fares.

He was loved by family, friends and neighbors, young and old and in between.

Abu Fares, You will be missed. May your memory be eternal.

Abu Fares was 97 years young.
